If you've started looking at diamonds, you've almost certainly run into this question already. It's one of the most common ones our team gets asked — and the honest answer is that there's no universally "right" choice. There's just what matters more to you.

Here's what's actually true, without the sales pitch either way.

They're not "fake" and "real" — they're both real diamonds

A lab-grown diamond isn't a simulant, and it isn't a different material dressed up to look like one — it's carbon, crystallised into a diamond structure, exactly the same as a natural stone. The only difference is where that crystallisation happened: over roughly a billion years under enormous heat and pressure deep in the earth, or over a few weeks inside a lab that recreates those same conditions. Gemologically, physically, and chemically, the result is a genuine diamond either way — which is exactly why it takes specialised equipment, not the naked eye, to tell them apart.

The real difference isn't what they are. It's how rare each one is, and what that rarity is worth to you.

Why natural diamonds cost more

Natural diamonds are finite. Every one in existence formed under conditions we can't speed up, and once mined, that supply doesn't grow back. That scarcity — combined with centuries of tradition as the diamond of engagement, inheritance and heirloom pieces — is what natural diamonds are really priced on. For a lot of buyers, that story matters: a stone that's genuinely one-of-a-kind, with a value that has historically held up well over decades.

Why lab-grown diamonds cost less

Lab-grown diamonds aren't scarce in the same way — they can be produced on demand, which is precisely why they typically cost 60–80% less than a natural diamond of equivalent size and quality. For many buyers, that gap is the whole decision: it means a meaningfully larger stone, or a higher colour and clarity grade, for the same budget. It's also, for what it's worth, an easier decision for anyone who'd rather their purchase have no ties to mining at all.

The trade-off worth knowing about

Where lab-grown currently falls short is resale and long-term value. Natural diamonds have an established resale market and a long track record of holding value. Lab-grown diamonds, being newer and effectively unlimited in supply, don't currently hold resale value anywhere near as well — some report it as close to negligible on resale. If this is a piece you expect to sell, insure at a rising value, or pass down as an heirloom, that's a real factor to weigh in, not just a footnote.

A simple way to think about it: if rarity, tradition, and long-term value matter most to you, natural is the stronger choice. If getting the biggest, cleanest-looking stone for your budget matters more than the story behind it, lab-grown is a completely legitimate — and increasingly popular — way to get there. Neither one is the "smart" choice and the other the "naive" one. They're just optimised for different priorities.
